NCAD0108 New Carved Pig

The NCA Carousel Identification Project on this page was completed on 11/11/08

The Request:

I have no history on this figure except that it was purchased in Virginia . Colored areas were all repainted - not sure about the pig's skin. If this was on a carousel, it was not on a pole (there are three holes in the belly). The pig is hollow, and was put together in sections. One ear has been put back on. Thanks for any help that you can provide.

The NCA Conclusion:

Your pig is a modern carving probably made in Asia during the last 20 years. The pig was carved in the Dentzel style. Original Dentzel and Herschell-Spillman pigs were inner row figures and were only carved for carousels with jumping figures. This would have required the figure to be mounted on a pole with pole holes on the belly and pommel area of the saddle. Many of the decorative carvings imported do not have the pole holes.
