Great Northern Carousel
Buffy, the buff buffalo.

National Carousel Association Logo © Gary Nance
Date of picture: April, 2004
The buffalo or bison is a native animal to the Montana area. This one features a pair of kissing prairie dogs, the small burrowing dog like animals discovered and named by Lewis & Clark, behind the saddle cantle. The figure is done with glazes so the natural grain and wood construction is visible on close inspection of the figure. Buffalo were rare on historic carousels, with Looff introducing them in his menagerie collection.
