The Korhinta in Holnemvolt Park Budapest The Art Nouveau style Korhinta (carousel) dates back to 1906, and was last restored in 1996. The carousel received the 1997 Europa Nostra Award for preservation of Cultural Heritage. Until very recently the carousel operated (virtually since inception) in Vidam park, which was becoming dilapidated, until in 2014 the Park was taken over by the adjacent Budapest Municipal Zoo for expansion purposes. The Zoo plans to retain a group of the older rides, including the carousel. The carousel was originally powered by horses, hidden in the basement under the carousel. When the carousel was finally stripped during the restoration of 1996, they found 10-15 layers of paint on the horses and carriages. They also found that the inner row stationary horses were older and had been moved in from another carousel. The renovation was sponsored partly by donations, “with the hat.” Unlike most carousels, the outer row of horses are oriented perpendicular, facing outward (at right angles to the carousel direction). They have spring-like mechanisms operated by handles at the base of the horse’s neck that allow the horses to move back and forward, similar to the racing action of a Derby Racer. There are also ornate chariots and rocking boats on the outer row, and more static horses and spinning tubs on the inner row. All the outside row horses are in a stretched out pose, with legs outstretched and almost horizontal, while the inner row horses are carved as prancers and jumpers. The horses are very ornate and well maintained, all housed in an ornate building with an elaborate interior and highly decorated ceiling.
