A Carousel for Missoula
Red Ribbons
|
© Gary Nance
Date of picture: April, 2004
When the first printing press arrived in Missoula in 1870, the horses pulling the wagon were adorned with red ribbons so that they could arrive in style. When Missoula's local newspaper adopted a horse, it seemed fitting that it should be decorated with red ribbons, and have a newspaper behind its saddle.
The center surround is visible in the background. It has been painted with scenes which depict the construction of the carousel.
