NCAID0107 - PTC Resin Reproduction

The NCA Carousel Identification Project on this page was completed on 10/22/08

The Request:

First of all, thank you for this wonderful service you provide. Attached, please find photos of the carousel horse we currently own. We purchased this horse a couple years ago from another individual here in Arizona as part of a 'package' deal along with various other furniture items. Unfortunately, we have no history of where this came from.

My observations? Looks like a replica to me as it is not wood - it is hollow and seems to be made of a very hard resin type and in perfect condition - it could certainly support weight and is not flimsy by any means, but not carved wood. It has a medallion on the side which reads " Philadelphia Toboggan Co. Row 1 No. 263 Germantown, Philadelphia, PA".

The medallion itself appears to be part of the casting - however the actual row and number figures appear to be pressed on afterwards.

The NCA Conclusion:

Your horse is a resin composite casting of a 1925 Philadelphia Toboggan Company (PTC) outside row stander. The original horse is from PTC machine #71 last operated at Americana Amusement Park, Middletown, Ohio. The carousel was sold at auction in 1985. These castings have been produced since shortly after the carousel was sold. The tag you refer to is a brass tag PTC used to identify the figure position on the carousel. The original tag would have been brass with the ID number and position data stamped on the tag.
