The Ferry County Fair Merry-Go-Round
Vintage style sign representing both the Armitage Herschell and the Herschell Spillman Companies

National Carousel Association Logo © Gary Nance
Date of picture: July 4, 2004
The horses on this carousel date from the 1890s to 1905, during a time when the carousel may have been produced by either the Armitage Herschell company or the Herschell Spillman company. (Click here for more information on these two companies.)

There are three distinct carving periods of horses on the carousel. Two of them can be identified by two very different styles of manes. The third style consists of just two horses which are thought to have been carved by Charles Dare. (A reference to Charles Dare is made in the captions for these two horses.) They all have pillow or detachable saddles.

The machine was laid out as was shown in the early catalogs of both Armitage Herschell and Herschell Spillman; Matched pairs, dark horses radiating around to light horses.

The balance of the scenery panels and rounding boards depict the life and scenes of Ferry County. They are painted by area artists who donated their time and talents.

This sign was painted by Bette Largent.
