2017 Convention - Other Attractions

Ok, we can't pick one website to describe the many, many things to do if extending your dates around the convention. A Google search of 'sites to see in LA' will show why. Do you want to spend the day across the sea on Catalina Island, a few hours reliving the Old West at the Autry National Center of the American West, taking pictures of your toes along the Hollywood Stars Walk of Fame, or perhaps fancying the elegant lifestyle of the famous rich or the tired war soldiers who rode the ocean liner, Queen Mary? Maybe space-out with the actual Shuttle Endeavour?

What about a few days in Las Vegas, a six hour drive away? Or that carousel in Santa Barbara, a mere two hour coastal drive up the world-famous Pacific Coast Highway. Irvine Spectrum Center 670 Spectrum Center Drive, Irvine, CA 92618 (949) 753-5180 Fiberglass: 32-figure menagerie carousel, including a camel and 2 chariots, made in 2001 by Barrango Studios of San Francisco. Many are based on antique carousel figures. Current hours: Sunday - Thursday: 10am-9pm; Friday - Saturday: 10am-11pm. The Center also has a small, off-track train and a Giant Wheel.

Orange County Great Park 6950 Marine Way Irvine, CA 92618 (949) 724-6247 Fiberglass: 32-figure menagerie carousel with 2 chariots, a hippocampus, pig and zebra; made in 2003 by Barrango Studios of San Francisco. Rounding boards have scenes of historical Orange County. Hours: Thursday-Friday: 10 a.m.-10 p.m. Saturday - Sunday: 9 a.m.-10 p.m. See Orange County from The Orange Balloon, one of the largest in the US.

South Coast Plaza 3333 Bristol Street Costa Mesa, CA, 92626 On Bristol St. side of Main Mall near Bloomingdales/Sears 1-800-782-8888 Fiberglass: 20 figures and 2 chariots. Normally all horses but at Easter it's rabbits. At Christmas? All reindeer! Unknown manufacturer Monday-Friday: 10am-9pm Saturday: 10am-8pm Sunday: 11am-6:30pm LOTS of luxury and specialty shops! One of largest malls in the U.S.

South Coast Plaza (2nd Carousel) Costa Mesa From Bristol, take Sunflower Avenue west, turn left on Bear St. Park on parking garage lower level. Take escalator up to shops, carousel is visible as you step off the escalator. Carved in 1991 by England's now defunct Chestnuts Carousel Co. Contains 13 wooden, child-sized horses; one for each of the 12 members of the Round Table and one for Lady Guinevere. It also has a chariot. Monday-Friday: 10am-9pm Saturday: 10am-8pm Sunday: 11am-6:30pm

Santa Ana Zoo 1801 E. Chestnut Avenue, Santa Ana, 92701 (714) 836-4000 Fiberglass: Chance machine with 23 figures, including an anteater and a brilliant blue hummingbird; 2 chariots -- bird's nest and a swan. The train that circles the Santa Ana Zoo was formerly at Santa's Village in Skyforest CA. The original, antique Santa's Village carousel is one of the complete machines in Lourinda Bray's Running Horse Studio collection. Open daily 10-4; Entry fee into zoo

Los Alamitos Racetrack 4961 Katella Avenue, Los Alamitos, CA, 90720 Four antique figures from a private collection are displayed around the escalator in the clubhouse; a PTC, Looff, Muller and an armored Stein & Goldstein. During September convention week, there is currently no racing or simulcasts scheduled on Monday or Tuesday. Wednesday there is simulcast racing. Children's Museum At LA Habra 301 South Euclid Street, La Habra, CA 90631 A machine carved by William Dentzel III replaced a William Dentzel II fiberglass one. It has 1 horse and 7 menagerie figures. All adults must be accompanied by a child. Adult individuals requesting to tour the Museum must schedule an appointment with education staff prior to visiting the Museum. Carousel To Visit in Riverside about 2 hours from hotel Castle Park 3500 Polk St, Riverside, CA 92505 (951) 785-3000 Fiberglass: 29 horses & 23 menagerie figures, most based on figures from Bud Hurlbut's auctioned carousel last operating as the Lagoon Carousel across from Knott's Berry Farm. Bud was creator of Castle Park and many original rides at Knott's Berry Farm. In September, Castle Park is open Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.

Carousel to visit in Canoga Park, less than an hour from the hotel Topanga Mall, 6600 Topanga Canyon Blvd Phone: (480) 371-1205 Website: https://www.westfield.com/topanga Located next to Target, this is a double decker fiberglass carousel with a camel, frog, lion, rabbit, deer, dinosaur and other animals and horses. Carousel to visit in Valencia, about an hour from the hotel Six Flags Magic Mountain Website: www.sixflags.com/magicMountain Frame of PTC #21, many of the horses are fiberglass copies. After Labor Day the park is only open on Saturday and Sunday.

Carousel to visit in Santa Barbara, about 2 hours from the hotel Chase Palm Park, Cabrillo Blvd and Garden St. Phone: (480) 897-1928 This carousel is a fancy Allan Herschell with 36 jumping horses.
