The horse heads (foam) protruding from the mirrors in the center of the carousel were added in 1976. Originally, oil paintings existed where the mirrors are as well as on the roundhouse below. (Original paintings survive on the upper (slanted) panels, the bottom of which can vaguely be seen in this shot; see next photo.)

These were removed (and apparently destroyed) in the 1950s and replaced by paintings of cartoon characters. When we began our renovation in the late 70s and couldn't find the original paintings, mirrors were installed. We hope one day to commission oil paintings to be mounted in these areas again.

The outer row horses in this picture are both Dentzel horses.
